Default CrossFit started small…really small.

In May 2012, Coach Danielle had just gotten her Level 1 Certificate in CrossFit. She had also recently retired from six years of teaching Stroller Strides when Fit by Default’s two original members (and former Stroller Strides members), Valerie and Nicole, approached Danielle about training them out of her garage. It was something that she had always dreamed of doing some day, so why not now?

You can feel comfortable coming in and getting a challenging and rewarding workout, no matter what your fitness level. Every movement, every exercise, can be scaled to fit your ability.

The workouts are short and high intensity, combining Olympic lifting, gymnastics, and metabolic conditioning (running, jump rope, rowing, biking). But first, we usually start the day with warm up and some strength training: back squats, push presses, snatches…whatever the programming calls for. We also incorporate mobility to keep the joints moving smoothly and to prevent injury. All this in a small group setting and completed in about an hour.

THE INSTRUCTORS

Danielle Heider

Danielle is Owner and Head Coach at Default CrossFit. She has been playing competitive sports since she was 8, with soccer being her first love. She also swam, played softball and basketball, and attended University of San Diego High School where she lettered all 4 years in soccer and swimming. At California State University, Chico, she earned a B.S. in Health Science, with a minor in Sociology, and played on the women’s lacrosse team for 4 years, two of which were as a player/coach.

After getting married and having her first son, Casey, she started attending Stroller Strides, a workout group for moms with their children. Soon after, she became an Instructor, where she continued helping moms to be fitter and lead healthier lives for over 6 years. During that time she trained for and ran the Long Beach Half Marathon and the OC Half Marathon, along with several mud runs around Southern California. Soon after having her second son, Brody, a friend introduced her to CrossFit.  She has now been doing CrossFit for over 7 years, starting out at Cutting Edge Kettlebells and CrossFit. She got her CrossFit Level 1 Certificate in April 2012. She coached at Boombox CrossFit in Temecula for over a year, and about the same time, started training a few Stroller Strides friends in her garage. Danielle earned her USAW Sports Performance Coaching Certificate in 2013, and her CrossFit Level 2 Certificate in April 2017. Danielle has run in Ragnar So Cal and competed in CrossFit locally at a C.A.L Competition where she placed 2nd in the Intermediate division.

 Davina Ellis

Davina is one of the newest coaches here at Default. She started swimming competitively at the age of 8. Her highlights in the years to follow were: competing internationally for two consecutive All Star teams in Canada, her first open water swim in Hawaii at an age where the thought of sharks pushed her to a second place finish, and multiple travels across the U.S. for swim meets. She lettered all 4 years in high school and worked hard to earn All American Honors, and in college she led her team to swimming Nationals. Davina has coached swimming and worked with all levels of athletes for over 10 years, and is currently the head swim coach for a local high school. Davina graduated from Vanguard University with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Women’s Studies.

Davina was drawn to CrossFit because of the competitive nature of the sport and how easy it is to find success in CrossFit daily. She joined Default shortly after her third child and worked hard to obtain her Level 1 Certificate. Davina previously trained for multiple mud runs like the “Tough Mudder” and continued to swim through masters programs. Since starting CrossFit, she has competed in several C.A.L. and Warrior League competitions. Davina enjoys pushing members and helping them become better than they were yesterday.

 

Jacqueline Burns

I am a daughter of Christ, a wife to a military man and a mother to two daughters. I was born and raised in Southern California. I left a year after high school and joined the U.S. Coast Guard where I served five years as a hospital corpsman. I met my husband, boyfriend at the time, when we were both stationed together in Northern California. We had our first daughter then moved to Washington State. We stayed there for four years and we left with another daughter and I left with an associate’s degree in Science. After Washington State, my husband was deployed for a year. While he was gone, my girls and I went to SoCal and lived with my mom. I started California Baptist University in Riverside, on campus after I looked to Christ for answers. I was hesitant to go back to school but after I took the path and started the journey, I knew I was in the right direction. I graduated from California Baptist University with a B.S. in Kinesiology. My husband got orders to Europe, the Netherlands to be exact, where we stayed for two years. While I was there, I focused on programming for the Crossfit military affiliate on the NATO base, where I earned a silver status for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

I started CrossFit in 2009. Before I was dedicated to CrossFit, I ran multiple 5K races and spent many hours in a typical gym. This was a dead end road for me and I never felt really good after my workouts; I was board. However, I continued to pump iron and be that mouse on the spinning wheel because at the time, I didn’t know of anything else to do. The day I tried CrossFit for the first time is the day I started one of the best chapters of my life! It is with CrossFit that I found my passion of wanting to teach others, especially military members. I am a big fan of the military and would like to give back to them.
